The Vibration Meter app, also known as a seismograph or seismometer, is a professional tool for measuring and analyzing vibrations. It is designed to detect and record seismic waves generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches, and other sources of vibration and shocks. The app utilizes the accelerometer in your mobile phone to accurately detect and analyze vibrations.
The app provides a graph that presents a detailed record of ground motion at a measuring point. The ground movement or object vibration is displayed as a function of time in the three Cartesian axes, with the z-axis perpendicular to the Earth's surface and the x- and y-axes parallel to the surface.
For measuring earthquake intensity, the app utilizes the Instrumental Intensity Scale developed by The United States Geological Survey. This scale maps peak ground acceleration and peak ground velocity onto an intensity scale similar to the Mercalli Scale, which quantifies the effects and impact damage of an earthquake.
In addition, the app incorporates other important measures such as the Richter Scale, which assigns a magnitude number to quantify the energy released by an earthquake, and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), which represents the maximum ground acceleration during earthquake shaking at a specific location.
Furthermore, this app allows you to monitor and share the results of your measurements with other users. It provides a convenient and accessible way to measure and monitor vibrations and shocks using your smartphone or tablet.
The Mercalli Intensity Scale used by this app distinguishes various levels of vibration and impact damage, ranging from not felt (instrumental) to catastrophic (near total damage). It provides a comprehensive assessment of the effects of vibrations on buildings, infrastructure, and human safety.
